Container ships at Port of Los Angeles Long Beach - China to USA blank sailings peak season capacity crunch July 2026

Your forwarder confirmed the booking. You got the rate. Cargo's at the warehouse.

Then 48 hours before cut-off: "Your container has been rolled to next week."

This isn't a one-off. Drewry's July 10 data: 46 blank sailings across East-West trades over the next five weeks. 48% of those cancellations are on the China–US lane — the exact route feeding Los Angeles and Long Beach from Shenzhen, Ningbo, and Shanghai.

The SCFI read on July 7 put LA/Long Beach at $2,750/FEU. With the July GRI of $1,000–$1,600/FEU and PSS stacking on top, that number hits $3,000/FEU by August. Our clients who booked mid-June locked rates $400–$600 lower than what you'll pay today.

And space isn't the only thing to worry about. ISF 10+2 filing mistakes are the single biggest reason CBP holds containers at LA/Long Beach — ahead of even tariff classification disputes. The 301 tariff exclusion window that reopened in January 2026 covers select industrial inputs and consumer goods under Chapters 84, 85, and 94 ? — if your HS code qualifies, you're leaving money on the table by not filing.

Here's what to do about all of this.

5 Things to Do Right Now

1. Book August space this week.

If your cargo needs to be on US shelves by September, your vessel should depart China by July 28. That means booking now — not July 20. Our clients who booked June 15 for late-July sailings paid $2,350/FEU to LA. Clients who called us July 10 are paying $2,750/FEU. The difference: $400 per container, gone in three weeks.

2. Get a rolling guarantee in writing.

If your container gets bumped and your forwarder has no written guarantee, you eat the next sailing at whatever spot rate applies — which will be higher. Demand this clause: "If rolled, priority loading on next vessel at the same rate." If they won't put it in writing, that tells you everything.

3. A booking without a vessel name isn't a booking.

Ask: "Which vessel? Which voyage number?" If your forwarder can't give you both, you're on a waitlist — not a confirmed sailing. Per Drewry's July 10 assessment, Gemini Cooperation leads all major alliances in schedule reliability on the China–US lane. If your cargo is on a Gemini-operated vessel, your odds of on-time departure are measurably higher.

4. Deliver cargo to CFS by Wednesday for a Friday cut-off.

Drop your cargo 1–2 days before cut-off and you're asking to get rolled. Terminals stack early-arriving containers in positions that actually get loaded. Late arrivals go on top — easy to skip when a vessel is overbooked. Get it there 5 days early.

5. Route LA/Long Beach. Skip the Panama Canal premium.

LA/Long Beach transit: 15 days from Shenzhen, no congestion right now (Portcast, week of June 28–July 4, 2026). New York/Savannah: 32 days via Panama, plus $1,000/FEU more. LA rail to Chicago adds 5 days — still beats all-water to the East Coast by two weeks. Only route East Coast if your warehouse is east of the Mississippi and you're not in a hurry.
